The future great writer, the great exile, world – famous Russian literature of the twentieth century, was born in this house on Bolshaya Morskaya 10 April (old style), 22/23 April (new style) 1899. Since the appearance of the house is almost not changed, has not changed and the house number. Moreover, now back, "Nabokov" street name, which has long been known as Herzen Street.
In his autobiographical novel "The Other shore" has been written almost fifty years after leaving the house, Vladimir Nabokov very accurately described and the external signs of the house, and the way of life of the inhabitants of the house – his family.
The house was called by Nabokov on Bolshaya Morskaya "The only house in the world". And understanding it literally – Nabokov and his family never had any of their own homes after departure from St. Petersburg November 15, 1917. And although over the years a lot of things in the house were lost, he still retains the appearance and atmosphere of a unique home, where grew a writer and who is familiar to us from the autobiography and other works of Nabokov (Masha, the Luzhin Defense, and others), pages which revives the mansion on Bolshaya Morskaya.
Since 1998 on the ground, the former front floor of the house is the only museum in the world V. V. Nabokov, 2008 – Museum of centuries Nabokov Faculty of Philology and arts, St. Petersburg state University.
The museum was opened to the centenary of the birth of the writer, when there was almost no object, with the remaining lifetime of Nabokov. However, over the years the museum has accumulated a significant collection and a large research library, which is always opened to our visitors. The museum occupies the first floor of a house, where the preserved dining room, living room and library. The former "Committee" room where the original interior has not survived, is used as an exhibition hall.
In addition to academic work, the Nabokov Museum SPbGU conducts scientific programme – annual April Nabokov reading, summer school for students and postgraduates, international Nabokov conference, as well as public lectures, round tables and literary readings.
Since 2008, when the Museum had become part of the Faculty of Philology and arts, St. Petersburg state University, we were able to significantly increase the collection and to start the restoration of the house.
