The Museum of S. M. Kirov, a branch of the State Museum of history of St. Petersburg (since 1991), is located in the historic center of St. Petersburg.
The house where the Museum is located, before the revolution belonged to the First Russian insurance society.
The building was erected in 1911 and 1914 under the project of L. N. Benoit with the participation of A. N. Benois, Y. Y. Benois and the engineer A. N. The Gunst, so it is also called the "The house of three Benois ". A comfortable apartment home that met the most demanding tastes, took a solid and wealthy people. After the October revolution and the nationalization of private property, flats changed their owners.
Here, in different years, the famous party leaders lived: Chairman of the Petrograd Soviet, G. Y. Zinoviev, Deputy Chairman of the Petrograd Soviet – G. E. Evdokimov, rector of the Communist University and the Commissioner of the Commissariat B. P. Posern, and also intellectuals: the composer Dmitri Shostakovich, artists N. K. Cherkasov and B. A. Babochkin, sculptor- M. G. Manizer.
The Museum of S. M. Kirov was opened in Leningrad on November 6,1938 and till 1955 occupied the former mansion of M. F. Kshesinskaya. Since 1955 it is located at Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt, 26 – 28, where in one of the comfortable apartments from 1926 to 1934 he was living Kirov, first Secretary of the Leningrad regional party Committee.
