The Legally St. Petersburg state literary Museum "XX century" had appeared in October 2007. It all started much earlier – in the air ideas about the museum in Leningrad literature of the Soviet period, with the desire to preserve and transmit to posterity the memory of the unique cultural heritage of the Leningrad of the XX century. That is why the museum's mission at this stage is to collect and preserve. Even without their own premises, which could accommodate the exhibition, the museum actively generates funds, is looking for keepers of literary archives, and cooperates with them, collects a library of Soviet literature.
The museum is created on the basis of the memorial Museum of M. M. Zoshchenko, and this is no accident. It destiny seemed to reflect the fate of the Soviet culture of the XX century with its persecution of the free word, procrustean bed of censorship, terror, and at the same time – the ability to maintain their human dignity, to live life with a clear conscience.
The museum of M. M. Zoshchenko was established on 5 December 1988, first as a branch of the Dostoevsky Museum. He became independent in April 1993, when opened the first exhibition. The museum is located in the last apartment of the writer in famous writer's house on Griboedov's channel, 9 (modern address – Malaya Konyushennaya, 4/2). In different years, simultaneously with Zoschenko in this house lived B. Kornilov, N. Z, E. Schwartz, M. Slonim, O. Forsh, Boris Eichenbaum, Boris Tomashevsky, and many other figures of literature and art. The house on Griboedov's channel, 9, Texas he moved in 1934, and then repeatedly changed apartments, and in recent years was in a small two-room apartment № 119. Now one room is a memorial, it is the writer's Cabinet in the second room (former room of his wife Vera Vladimirovna Zoshchenko) hosted a literary exposition.
The uniqueness of the museum of Mikhail Zoshchenko is that in the study all things authentic, the atmosphere that prevailed in the days of the writer since January 1955 till July 1958, recreated in precise detail. In this study, fragments of manuscripts, unfinished sheet into the typewriter, thrown carelessly glasses, cozy green lamp on the bedside table – a book about Gogol, on the Desk – photos of the parents – there is a sense of penetration into the world of the writer, in his complex, broken lives. The museum is the exhibition activities at various venues in the city is constantly conducted research work and replenish the funds. One of the priority directions of activities of the museum in recent years is working with children. The museum developed tours and museum classes on literature of the XX century, created with the school curriculum and modern educational standards.
