The state Museum of urban sculpture, St. Petersburg was founded on July 28, 1932. It is the only Russian Museum institution devoted to the study, protection and restoration of monuments of monumental art in the urban environment. In doing museum has more than 200 monuments and 1500 memorial plaques. The number of museum objects: Rostral columns, Narva and Moscow triumphal gate, Sphinxes on the dock at the Academy of fine arts, Equestrian groups on the Anichkov bridge, monument to Peter I, Catherine II, Nicholas I, A. S. Pushkin, M. C. Lomonosov, A. C. Suvorov – have become symbols of St. Petersburg and many others.
The main exposition of the museum – tombs and necropolis of Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
Annunciation Church – the burial (1717 – 1724, architect. D. Trezzini, So swertfeger) is the oldest stone Church in Saint Petersburg, an outstanding monument of architecture of the Petrine Baroque. Here is buried Century A. Suvorov, are the most valuable historical and artistic gravestones XVIII – XIX centuries, the exhibition of a unique collection of works by prominent sculptor of Russian classicism I. P. Martos: gravestones E. C. Kurakina, I. E. Gagarina, N. I. Panin and others This tomb is rightfully called the first Russian Pantheon: here are buried members of the Royal family, many prominent statesmen of the eighteenth century.
One of the first in St. Petersburg Lazarevskoe cemetery (now the Necropolis of the XVIII century) became a museum under the open sky in 1923. It survived more than 1000 tombstones XVIII – early XX centuries. Among them contemporaries of Peter I, the figures of national history, science and culture, representatives of the most famous noble families in the history of Russia: M. C. Lomonosov, D. I. Fonvizin, Sheremetevo, P. I. Shuvalov, admirals C. J. Chichagova, N. S. Mordvinov, grandfather of A. S. Pushkin, I. A. Hannibal, the widow of A. S. Pushkin. N. Lansky; Petersburg architect: I. E. Starov, A. N. Voronikhin, A. D. Zakharov, J. Thomas de Thomon, D. Quarenghi, K. I. Rossi, A. the Betancourt.
In the Necropolis of Masters of arts (ex. Tikhvin cemetery) – about 200 tombstones writers, musicians, artists of the XIX century, actors and theatre artists of XIX – XX centuries: M. I. Glinka, M. P. Mussorgsky, P. I. Tchaikovsky, N. M. Karamzin, I. A. Krylov, F. M. Dostoevsky, A. A. Ivanov, P. A. Fedotov, I. I. Shishkin, A. I. Kuindzhi, B. M. Kustodiev, V. F. Komissarzhevskaya, Y. M. George, N. K. Cherkasov, G. A. Tovstonogov.
Artistic gravestones XVIII – XX centuries is the greatest masters of Russian monumental art: I. P. Martos, M. I. Kozlovsky, F., Gordeev, V. A. Beklemishev, A. N. Benoit, Moscow, M. K. Anikushin. In the museum cemeteries can be exhaustive to trace the path of the development of art memorial sculpture.
In the memorial part of the museum complex also includes the necropolis museum "literaturnye bridges" at the Volkov cemetery. Buried here Annalise, V. G. Belinskii, I. P. Turgenev, N. C. groves, D. I. Mendeleev, I. P. Pavlov, many prominent figures of the Leningrad culture and science of the XX century.
In the Museum's collection holds a remarkable collection of sculpture and graphics. For many years the Museum organizes exhibitions of contemporary art that resonate in the artistic environment of St. Petersburg, attracted the attention of many art lovers.
In 2002 it was opened a new exhibition building in Chernoreckom lane, immediately it has became known in the city as a Playground for an interesting exhibition projects. Its halls are held solo exhibitions of the St. Petersburg artists and sculptors, as well as thematic exhibitions from the museum.
The museum is one of the leading institutions of St. Petersburg, engaged in restoration activities. In the early 1970s, the museum has a restoration workshop in stone; restoration of metal, plaster, graphics, and the work of the high complexity of marble specialists of the city.
In recent years, the museum implemented a unique restoration project Rostral columns, equestrian groups Anichkov bridge, of the Dioscuri, the Alexander column, the Moscow Triumphal gate, monuments of the Field of Mars, Sphinxes at the Academy Hudojestv currently being restored Egyptian gate in Tsarskoye Selo and other monuments in S. Petersburg.
