The new stage of the Alexandrinsky theatre, Theatrical and cultural complex "Alexandrine" (chief director is Marat Gatsalov) was opened in Spring 2013. It is a unique multifunctional theatre center, which has analogues neither in Russia, nor in the West. It is situated adjacent to the main building of the Alexandrinsky theatre between Ostrovsky Square and the embankment of the Fontanka River, the complex is carefully inscribed in the historic urban environment.
The beginning of the New scene is opened a new page in the history of the Alexandrinsky theatre: its activities are aimed at updating and development of the national theatre and its convergence with contemporary culture, the distance between the modern theatre and the public, the formation of a new audience. The new stage of the Alexandrinsky theatre is the most modern from the point of view of technical equipment theatrical space of Russia, one of the main tasks of which is the introduction of innovative technologies in theatrical practice.
The activity of a New stage of the Alexandrinsky theatre is not limited to the actual theatre: in the future, the complex will become not only the Russian forpost of modern theatrical process, but also one of the urban centres of contemporary culture.
