Museum of History of Photography (MYTH) was based 18.08.2003 in St. Petersburg on the initiative of several individuals and public organizations. Collection the MYTH was formed by merging several private meetings with various vectors of interest, among which special mention deserves an extensive collection of V. V. Platonov. The Museum's premises in addition to the four permanent exhibition halls include a gallery for temporary exhibitions, storage facilities and the library.
The prototype of the MYTH was the section of pictures of the Albertina Museum in Vienna, and it's predecessor – the detailed exposition of collection of V. V. Platonov in Art College was named after N. Roerich.
The main difference between the MYTH from the existing Museums in Russia Pictures is the versatility collect and present collections, including the ultimate goal of all aspects of the existence of the world pictures for the whole period of its existence. However, despite the unlimited breadth of the Museum's interests, priority in the exhibition activities, the MYTH is certainly the view of photography as an artifact, research and curatorial work with images.
The MYTH is situated in the historical centre of St. Petersburg on the Petrograd side, on the street, which could well be called the street of St. Petersburg avant – Garde. Indeed, the opposite MYTH is the former Studio of the artist Mikhail Matyushin (now the Museum of St. Petersburg avant-Garde) has appeared in the early twentieth century, one of the foci of the Russian "bodylength". In the yard behind the workshop Matyushina preserved the house in which he lived, worked and died, "the witness of the invisible, the great Russian avant – garde artist Pavel Filonov.
