Beginning to the museum put the model – camera, first mentioned by Peter I in 1709. This is one of the first museums in Russia and one of the largest maritime museums in the world. Here are collected more than 700 000 items, including more than two thousand of models of ships. Many of them – the masterpieces of decorative – applied art. The pride of the museum is the famous Boat of Peter I – "Grandfather of the Russian Navy," authentic submarine of construction S. Drzewiecki, built in 1881, and other rarities.
The museum has canvases of Aivazovsky, A. Bogolyubov, A. Beggrova and other Russian artists, sculptures by Mark Antokolsky, P. Klodt, M. Mikeshina, N. Pimenov . Foreign maritime represented by R. Kerr Porter, L. Caravaque, F. Perrot, F. Hackert, N. Kondo and other artists. The museum has four branches: the cruiser "Aurora", "Submarine D-2" Narodovolets", "Kronstadt Fortress" in Saint – Petersburg and the "Road of Life" (on the shore of Lake Ladoga in the village Osinovets Leningrad region).
