February 5, 2015 at 16.00 at the Museum of Printing (emb. of Moika River, 32) opened the exhibition of caricatures by Swiss artist Paul Robert (1867-1934) on the famous Petersburgers of the XIX-XX centuries, published in "St. Petersburg newspaper".
For visitors the exhibition will be open from 05.02.2015 – 05.03.2015
Exhibition of works by Swiss artist Paul Robert (1867 – 1934) represents more than 100 caricatures on the famous Petersburgers of late XIX – XX centuries, created by the artist for the "St. Petersburg newspaper".
Robert P. arrived in St. Petersburg from the native Fribourg (Switzerland) in 1885. For over thirty years he served in the French drama troupe, performed on stage of the Imperial Mikhailovsky Theatre. In 1918, due to the revolutionary events he left Russia and returned to Switzerland.
Robert P. was seriously engaged in the visual arts, painted pictures with oil, successfully exhibited and sold them, but especially clearly his talent was manifested in painting. Gained fame artist albums "Our French artists. Caricatures and autographs of the artists of the Mikhailovsky Theatre "(1896) and, in particular," All Petersburg in caricatures "(1903).
As an artist – caricaturist Robert P. collaborated with the "Petersburg newspaper". The exhibition features enlarged copies of caricatures of the artist, made with newspaper publications of 1902 – 1917's. On them can be seen opera singers Chaliapin, N. Figner, V. Kastorsky, Sobinov, F. V. Lytvyn, dancers A. Pavlova and O. Preobrazhenskaya, directors N. Baliev, V. Meyerhold, K. Miklashevsky, composers Rimsky – Korsakov, E. Nápravník, C. Cui, A. Glazunov, artists I. Repin, K. Makovsky, writers P. Boborykin, Gorky, V. Krylov, I. Grinevskaja, literary critic S. Vengerov, lawyers S. Andreevskiy, V. Gerard, N. Karabchevsky.
A special interest represents gallery of figures of municipal government (over 70 caricatures). This vowels of the Saint – Petersburg City Council P. Durnovo, V. Nabokov, M. Petrunkevich, N.Shubin-Pozdeev , G. Falborg, I. Foinitsky, publisher M. Stasyulevich, financier S. Propper, city mayors (at different times): I. Glazunov, P. Lelyanov, N.A. Rezcov, I. Tolstoy, city engineers K. Griboyedov and E . B. Kontkovsky. Caricatures of Robert P. differing by observation, ease and "kindness" to the hero, represent to the modern viewer living images of many famous Petersburgers.
