Museum "Raznochintsy Petersburg" tells the story of undress Petersburg. The Commons in pre – revolutionary Russia was called those whose social position does not fit within the strict framework of the concepts of "hereditary nobleman" or "an eminent merchant".
The clerks, retired soldiers, a variety of attendants, workers and, of course, students, and other proletarians of mental labour lived blocks away from Nevsky prospect.
Memorable historical address – here from 12 February 1894 till 25 April 1895 had been living V. I. Ulyanov – the future head of the first socialist state in the world, had existed since 1924, when after the death of V. I. Lenin, on the initiative of the residents of nearby houses, in the Cossack lane was established "area of Ilyich".
In 1938 on its based, it was opened the museum – apartment V. I. Ulyanova – a branch of the Leningrad branch of the Central Museum of V. I. Lenin.
In 1992, by decree of the mayor of St. Petersburg from 27.07.1992 the museum was saved as a historical memorial. The institution has received the status of a state Museum, administered by Lenin, then the Admiralty district, St. Petersburg and became known as the "Museum of the history of the revolutionary – democratic movement 1880 – 1890 – years".
In September 2003, by decree of the Administration of St. Petersburg, the museum was transferred to the Committee for culture of St. Petersburg.
In 2006, in connection with the opening of the new exhibition – "Around the Semenovsky parade" – Museum has got its modern name,it is Saint – Petersburg State institution of culture "Memorial Museum "Raznochintsy Petersburg".
