On June 4 in St. Petersburg, in the historic part of the city, on the second line of Vasilievsky Island, 29, opened a new museum of modern art.
The museum was established on the basis of private collection Aslan Chekhoev. Unlike most private collections Chekhoev collection is not based on local experience and subjective preferences, and on understanding the overall picture of the art of our time. First paintings Chekhoyev purchased many years ago, when he was a very young man.
Then, while working in Moscow and then in St. Petersburg, he developed his ideas about contemporary art process, clarify collectioners priorities. Personal acquaintance with many artists – from the classics to young people living, socializing with leading art historians and art critics helped navigate the space of contemporary art. Works in the collection are acquired in the artists' studios, galleries, auctions, including famous – London Sotheby's, Christie's, McDougall.
In the process of formation a private collection grew out. Two years ago, embarked on a public opening of the museum. The museum were allotted three floors of the building the 70s of the 19th century next to the metro Vasilyeostrovskaya. Then came the turn of builders, architects and designers. The result is a museum space, equipped with the latest technology. Here and system for maintaining temperature and humidity, and accent light and movable modules to change the geometry of the exhibition space.
But the main thing – the collection itself and the exposure that covered two floors of the building. The exhibition – the classics of nonconformist art of the Soviet period (L. Kropivnitsky, V. Nemuhin, L. Masterkova, O. Rabin, D. Krasnopevtsev, V. Yankilevsky, V. Pivovarov, M. Shvartsman, E. Steinberg, M. Kulakov, O. Tselkov, V. Yakovlev, A. Zverev, etc.) and contemporary Russian art (AES + F, Kulik, A. Osmolovsky, L. Rotar, D. Gutov, A. Beliaev – Gintovt , V. Pushnitsky , G. Maiofis etc).
Artists have made history represented in many museum collections in Moscow and abroad, but usually not in St. Petersburg. That is why the new museum will take its place in the cultural life of the northern capital. His collection does not duplicate but complements other museum collections of the city. In St. Petersburg, while only here presented retrospective of contemporary Russian art from its beginnings in the 1950s to the present day.
Contemporary Art runs mainly by museums, and at the current level of prices museumification it becomes increasingly problematic. In this context, it is difficult to overestimate the importance of the new museum – the first public private contemporary art museum in St. Petersburg.
