Тhe modern Panorama of Nevsky prospect, photographing every house. At the time of the release of the jubilee edition of Karl Karlovich was 48 years. Interestingly, maybe this edition was first placed advertising Karl Bulla, where we see energetic man in the bowler hat surrounded by numerous photographic cameras, eager and ready to shoot the new object city!
Since the beginning of his photographic activity K. Bulla tends to location photography.
In 1876 bull served merchant foreman, photographic career started in the beginning of 1880-ies, assistant to the photographer at a shop on Nevsky prospect, 110, in the same photo shop Kbull later worked independently.
In 1886 he wrote a petition to the mayor of St. Petersburg on obtaining the right of production of any kind of photographic works outside the home, such as on the street, flats, in places nearby neighborhoods of St. Petersburg" (from the petition Bull stored in RGIA). This permission was received, and issued the certificate # 1507 (ibid.).
During its long activity in pictures (over 40 years) Bulla was awarded many awards and for the series orphanages in 1910 Karl Bulla was awarded the title of hereditary honorary citizen of St. Petersburg (with a title that had spread to direct heirs).
Karl Bulla cooperated in many illustrated magazines, more than just a magazine "Niva". He occupied himself with the publication of my photos – both in the original and in the technology phototype in the format of open letters. Many publishers, such as "Richard", "Community of St. Eugene", "Granberg", issued cards in his photos. With its negatives produced a large number of photo greeting cards, fotopechat Aientura. His pictures were also used in the design of books and guides. Much attention Karl Bulla paid extraordinary events, known for his series of photographs about the flood in St. Petersburg in 1903, city fires. In view of the photographer also proved: the collapse of the Egyptian bridge in 1904, the collapse of the ceiling in the building of the State Duma on may 2, 1907, and the holding in St. Petersburg aviation week in 1910 and many other notable and important events of the city life. The photos Karl Bulla in various publications produced more than 1,000 postcards with views of St. Petersburg. Having moved into a new apartment and Studio, Karl Bulla, already had two adult sons, Alexander and Victor, who, with good reason, had his full assistants. The figure of the father was so bright that completely eclipsed part in the shooting and creating their own works of his sons.
With great difficulty, based on publications of the time, we can single out from the vast heritage of Karl Bulla the legacy of his sons. For example, V. Nikitin in the book “About photographers and photos” writes that at Yasnaya Polyana in 1908 Karl Bulla was shot Leo Tolstoy together with Victor, but in one of the publishers of open letters that time we met the image of Leo Tolstoy, the author of which was Alexander bull. This fact confirms once again that the study of the heritage of this dynasty not only not finished yet, and to be back in the beginning.
Victor and Alexander bull continued his father after 1917, when Karl Bulla left for Estonia. After the revolution of photosalon continued to work as a state institution.
Heavy social upheaval has not spared the famous dynasty: in 1928, was arrested and sent into exile Alexander bull, and in 1938 as a German spy on the basis of their “colleagues” in the Studio, Victor Bulla was sentenced to be shot. By the NKVD of the family Bulla was confiscated result of their creative labour – negatives, accumulated during the decades of hard work. Part of the negatives have been destroyed during the search, the remaining negatives were seized and currently form the basis of the collection of the State Fund of cinema-photo documents (more than 130,000 items!).
Once famous surname bull for decades was forgotten. Although the photo Studio on Nevsky prospect, 54, continued to exist. Favorite citizens photo shop didn't stop working even during the great Patriotic war and Blockade of Leningrad. “Photo №1” in the post – war years became the center of a family portrait and photography of our city. Thousands of Leningraders annually visited a photo Studio on Nevsky prospect, 54, to make the photo on the passport or memorable photo in the family album.
In 2002 on the initiative and at the expense of the new owner of the premises Valentin Evgenievich of Elbek to the 300 anniversary of St. Petersburg at the store was a large-scale reconstruction, which preserved for the city memorial room of the photographer Karl Bulla. It was recreated historical glass dome of the workshop by K. Bulla, towering above the building of the house 54 pre-revolutionary Nevsky prospect. The premises of the new photo Studio is a Fund of historical pictures of the name of Karl Bulla, aimed at the study and popularization of Russian photography of the XIX – first half of the twentieth century, the Museum held the exhibition.
