St. Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music in the historic center of the city, is situated in a building, which is a part of one of the most beautiful architectural ensembles of the city – Aleksandrinsky Ensemble Theater. This architectural masterpiece with street now has his name, it was built by the great Carl Rossi.
Since 1840, in one of the buildings surrounding the theater management was the imperial theaters. Here administer the fate of Russian theater, concluded contracts with the actors here have brought their works intended for the stage, Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, A. Ostrovsky, Chekhov and other great figures of the national theater.
In 1918 there was a reorganization of the Directorate, and in this building, it was decided to open its first theater in Petrograd Museum. Position of the Museum of the People's Commissar of Education was approved by A. Lunacharsky. However true founding date of Theatre Museum was in 1908, when in St. Petersburg indoors Panayev theater was opened "First Russian theatrical exhibition", which were first shown to the public materials, subsequently formed the basis of the Museum.
Gradually the collection was enriched materials private collections J.F. Gorbunova, M.G. Savina and A.E. Molchanov, V.V. Protopopov, S.V. Svetlov ,L.I. Zheverzheeva, G.M. Levitin and archives Directorate of the Imperial Theaters.
The first exhibition was opened to visitors May 16, 1921. In 1970 he established the first branch – Memorial Museum Rimsky-Korsakov (Summer Ave, 28), where he spent the last 15 years of life of the great composer. In 1975 he opened a memorial museum in the house of Fyodor Chaliapin (st. Graftio 2b). In 1985 the collection was supplemented with the State Collection of musical instruments. In 1990, the museum received another building – Counts Sheremetevs Palace, the famous Fountain House, built in the XVIII century (Embankment of Fontanka, 34). With the move of collection of musical instruments in Sheremetev Palace, the affiliate gets the name Museum of Music in Sheremetev Palace. In 1994 he opened another branch – Memorial Samoilov family apartment (street Stremyannaya 8).
The first two years were a period of intense museum collecting. In the future the museum focused on collecting and exhibiting materials relating primarily to the history of domestic drama theater. With the opening of new branches of music (Rimsky-Korsakov Museum and Chaliapin) and obtain a collection of musical instruments in the important area of activity of the museum becomes the history of music and musical theater.
The museum and its affiliates are conducted tours and lectures on the history of theater for children and adults, concerts, recordings, memories evenings, meetings with famous actors, artists, musicians, showing independent actors and directors work, solo performances, chamber concerts. Museum as a scientific, cultural and educational center visited by over 140 thousand people per year.
