APERTO gallery was founded by a young curator of contemporary art – Elena Jushinoj together with friends and colleagues in 2012. It is a gallery and an alternative site in St. Petersburg for young Russian and Western artists and curators. The project is the first initiatived in St. Petersburg for the integration of young Russian art scene in the international art community.
APERTO gallery in St. Petersburg is a tribute to outstanding curators of the XX century Achille Bonito Oliva, Harald Zeeman and the history of modern art. In 1980 year, the curators of international renown has created a unique section of young art Aperto (from lat. "forward") at the Venice Biennale, which lasted until the mid – 1990's.
APERTO gallery is more than just an exhibition space. It is a platform for experimentation, educational programmes, meetings and communication professionals and art lovers, promising young artists and curators with a wider audience.
APERTO gallery is the first independent research space in St. Petersburg, integrated in the Western context.
