Frants Gallery Space was created in new York in 1998 with the aim of presenting the Leningrad St. Petersburg artists who worked during the 50's, the post – war years to the present time.
The greatest attention was paid to the so – called Leningrad underground is a unique and little – known cultural phenomenon of the 70 – ies and the artistic and social environment that created them. This phenomenon has only recently begun to attract the attention of philologists and historians of art, first publications on this topic. However, there's nothing better facilitates the representation of the artists, than live exhibitions, solo and group, which are carried out in our gallery. Gradually, with the increasing interest of the public and professionals to our work, we have expanded the scope of activities. Now it includes not only the traditional genres of painting, drawing and sculpture, and art, combined with the latest technology: cyberart, video art, computer animation.
Expanded the territory since 2007 Frants Gallery Space operates on two sites – opened a branch in St. Petersburg, in the historical centre of the city – on Rubinsteina Street. In addition, since 2007 the gallery cooperates with the national center for contemporary art (NCCA) in St. Petersburg, supporting artists working with new technologies. In the framework of this cooperation in the suburbs of St. Petersburg – Kronstadt in October 2007 was opened CYLAND MediaArtLab is the only Russian Media art laboratory and Art – residence for artists working with new technologies. The project site www.cyland.ru besides solving information problems, also works as a national online archive of videos and documentation of works of the Russian media artists.
Joint international project CYLAND plays the role of "generator art projects in the field of art of new technologies and art, not only inspiring Russian authors, but also directly overseeing and financing the production of a number of art works and projects. As an active participant and curator, Frants Gallery engaged in such artistic projects as cyber happening SLOWNESS, the author's device & cyber happening from Anna Franz (USA) and Cyland Media Lab (Russia), BREGION – the author's device & sound installation Michael cross Sator ArXeNeKrOHen (Russia), MOVIE MINCER – the author's device & video performance of Sergei Teterin (Russia) and other works by artists working with new technologies. Gallery artists are regular participants and staff of the international festival of cybernetic art "CYBERFEST", which is held annually at the Central exhibition venues of St. Petersburg and is the contemporary and classical works of art of new technologies, the U.S. and Russia. And Frants Gallery artists have been involved in many other Russian and international festivals and exhibitions of contemporary art.
For the first ten years of operation our gallery actually presented the evolution of the art of Leningrad / St. Petersburg in its complexity and quirkiness: from isolation and isolation of underground until the full integration of the St. Petersburg artists in the international art world , the interference of cultures and infinity of possibilities. We are proud to celebrate our tenth anniversary, and open new horizons in their activities in art, new technologies, video and media art, art technical experiments. Our gallery provides consultations (art consulting) and information about the artists and directions collectors and potential customers. We are the only USA gallery specializing in the work of the Leningrad / St. Petersburg artists of the second half of the 20-th century to the present. We are part of this culture.
