

Central scientific – research geological exploration museum named after academician F. N. Chernysheva is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. Its collection includes about one million exhibits,among which include specimens of rocks, minerals, fossil flora and fauna and others. One of the unique exhibits is the monument of the Russian stone-cutting art of the 30 years of XX century mural "the industry of socialism", made in the technique of Florentine and Russian mosaic of jewelry and gemstones. Among many objects – the remains of large fossil marine and terrestrial animals (crustacean fish, mosasaur, mammoth, woolly rhinoceros), a cube of rock salt weighing 1 ton, the blocks of malachite from the Demidov mines in the Urals, a 1.5 meter long beryl crystal from the Altai, Muscovite window from the chapel of XVII century with the river Indigirka, a collection of models of famous diamonds. The beggining of collection had put in 1882 with the creation of the Geological Committee of Russia. The museum had opened for visitors in 1930.
