The famous essay by Linda Nochlin “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” was published over 40 years ago. However, the discussion about the place and meaning of the heritage of female artists in international museum collections started just recently. With the development of gender politics, new researches and the growing public interest, the representation of women and their creative work becomes an important part of exhibition and educational strategies of art museums worldwide.
The exhibition “Nonconformists” presents works by over 80 artists from the collection of the Museum of nonconformist art on two venues – the large and the small hall – and covers the time period from 1960’s until today. This project is the Museum’s contribution to the professional discussion about the cultural heritage of female artists in the XXth century and, at the same time, an introduction to a larger research on the lives and work of women in the history of the Leningrad underground.
