“Incantation” is a series of geometric hard edge paintings. By acting as spells they create a complex visual alchemy in the gallery space. The paintings have a hard yet soft appearance at the same time. This effect is created by combining a soft colour palette and simplified geometric forms. This project is a tribute to Russian Constructivist art and also a link to the tradition of “colour field” painters from Sydney, Australia.
“As an artist from Sydney, Australia the process of creating the artworks at SPAR has given me a platform to produce an abstract visual narrative between the North and South hemispheres offering the audience a visual dialogue. By using visual images, my artwork explores auto-biographical themes, humour, playfulness and alchemy” — comments Polly Williams on her work at the residency.
