9 April 2014 - 24 April 2014
On 10 April, 2014, at the Art Gallery “KGallery”, American photographer Robert Whitman will present his new exhibition in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Robert Whitman – the namesake of the famous media artist and installer, is not less famous, but not quite as familiar to Russian viewers. New York photographer, capturer of beautiful moments, Whitman is considered to be one of the best visual chroniclers of metropolis areas. His creative work is not limited to one city. Through his infinitely passionate journey of the world, the artist has made thousands of pictures. Robert Whitman’s love of travelling goes back several decades. "The young hippy" traveled the world after college, and discovered early in his life that photography is the best way to get wide access to people and countries.
Through years of active work, the objects of the photographer’s creative research included night hotels and tropical beaches, animals, things, the human body and of course, faces of people. Faces is his primary focus.
His talent for recognizing the originality and uniqueness only in the appearance manifested at an early age. Wandering around New York in 1978, Robert took a picture of a young musician in his studio. Years later, the young musician became known to the world as the pop icon, Prince.
In 2009, the publishing house Perceval Press released Robert Whitman’s photo-album entitled “MOSTLY PEOPLE”. Whitman’s “MOSTLY PEOPLE” was highly acclaimed by critics and had very impressive sales. The author of the book was deservedly named one of the most versatile and poignant living photographers.
A citizen of the world, Whitman still travels around the world and gathers his collection of the utmost brightest images. A unique and special place in his work is Latin America, as evidenced by the impeccable images of Brazil, Cuba and Uruguay. His travels, which have lasted a lifetime, also brought Whitman to Moscow, where he photographed guests of nightclubs and wedding processions on the Red Square. In Haiti, the photographer was drawn to sultry Creole women and visitors of a dentist’s office.
Robert Whitman is known for his collaboration with the American Dance Theatre Pilobulus for which he did several photo shoots.
Throughout many years of hard work, Robert’s photographic talent has led to an impressive portfolio that includes editorial photographs in publications such as Travel + Leisure, Women's Health, Departures, and first-class advertising campaigns for highly acclaimed clientele.
In 2012, Whitman completed a massive series of photographs (over 6,000 shots) for a new watch brand “SLOW”. In this series, Whitman captured everyday life of New York and compellingly relayed the main idea of his client, which also coincides with his own artistic credo: real people, fun and wasting time on things that are truly important in life
