"Mobile archive" – is a traveling collection of video art of the Israeli Center for Digital Art, which has collected more than 1,500 works of Israeli and international artists. The purpose of "Mobile archive" is the presentation of contemporary art practices of Israeli artists; it contains video art, sound art and documentation of performances and installations. Many videos are thematically related to the issues of identity, collective memory, history, geopolitical conflicts, socio-cultural differences and other topics important for modern Israel, and for the world community as a whole. All of them are in free access: each visitor can choose it interesting video and make your own viewer.
Originating in 2007 as a result of the negotiations between the Centre and the Museum of Modern Art in Hamburg on how the archive can exist outside of its context and be opened for a wider audience, "mobile archive" travels to various countries and as an independent project, and as a participant in various exhibitions, conferences, festivals and other contemporary art projects. The project has already visited more than 20 sites, including Kunswerein (Hamburg), WYSPA Institute of Art (Gdansk), Art in General (New York), Centro Da Ciltura Judaica (San – Paulo) and so on. In Russia, where "Mobile Archive" appears for the first time, it is conducted by the creative association curators “CAC”.
The main principle of "mobile archive" is its accessibility for the audience and the opportunity to study it by yourself: each visitor can choose to view any videos of interest to him. In addition to artistic and educational components of the project "Mobile Archive" raises an important question about the storage and transfer of knowledge in modern society, and the role and form of archives in the process.
Israeli video art is known worldwide, but in St. Petersburg until now there was no large – scale projects devoted to him. "Mobile Archive" is a unique opportunity to present to the Russian audience a large number of works by world famous Israeli artists, as today archive is a collection of the best in the world of Israeli video art. Under the project, the audience will have the opportunity to see works that have won many prizes and participating in important international festivals, biennials and exhibitions. Among the authors are represented: Yael Bartana, Dor Guez, Sigalit Landau, Rohe Rosen, Ruti Sela, Gilad Ratman, Guy Ben-Ner, Avi Mograbi, Nira Pereg, Dana Levy, Nir Evron and many others.
Format of "mobile archive" in St. Petersburg will aim to present the project most widely: Media Library will be organized with open access to the archive and exhibition of video art. Music library, containing more than 1,500 works in the public domain, will be represented in the fund "Pro Arte" from 7th to 30th of April 2014.
