The exhibition is devoted to the bright and significant events in the history of Russian culture – the collection of Kokorev Vasiliy Aleksandrovich (1817 – 1889).He was a merchant of 1st guild, commerce adviser and believer. An ardent patriot, talented and enterprising man with a broad kind he justified his nickname "Russian nugget". His collection is remarkable for its integrity and high level. Gallery, which was opened in Moscow in January 1862, lasted only until the mid 1860s, when financial difficulties forced the owner to start negotiations on the sale of the collection. However, having decided to leave the gallery, Kokorev sought to preserve the integrity of the meeting. In March 1870 156 works owned by Kokorev were acquired for the collection of sovereign Tsar Alexander Alexandrovich. In 1897 collection was transferred to the organization of the Russian Museum of Emperor Alexander III. Subsequently, other works from Kokorev’s collection were also presented in the exposition, and they were not purchased in time for the Tsar Alexander Alexandrovich. In the 1920-1930-ies many of these works has been issued for permanent storage in different museums of the USSR, but the core of the Kokorev’s collection left in the Russian Museum.
The exhibit will explore the direction of V. A. Kokorev, collecting activities and in particular with its collection of authentic masterpieces. The exhibition will include paintings by Karl Briullov and his sketches for monumental church songs, works of Fyodor Alexeyev, Peter Basin, Alexander Warnecke, Alexei Venetsianov, Gregory Myasoedov, Alexander Orlovsky, Vasiliy Tropinin,Nicanor and Gregory Chernetsov, Sylvester Shchedrin and other local artists of XIX century.
